NeatImage 5.0
I’m not very found at adding anything to my photographic workflow. I like spending time developing my own black and white film, scan them and that’s it. I spend already too much time in front of a computer during my day job, I’ve been trying to cut a bit. But I had developed some Ilford 3200 (exposed at 1600) last week-end and while I was happy with the result, I was a bit curious if there was a way for me to cut some of the noise. After asking some people, I’ve settled on NeatImage. Looks like it was my best bet. I didn’t want to try them all. I’ve downloaded the demo version and tried it tonight. Wow. I’m very, very impressed at what I could achieve in less than 3 minutes. I’ve used default values and the results are astonishing !! I’m definitely going to play a bit with this software and try to push it a bit with some very high ISO (Can you say 12800 and 25600 ?)
I’ve used the Auto Profile option to get a sample of some ‘clean’ noise. I will play a bit with some other options this week-end. Looks like I can use a calibration target. I’m wondering how it could work with film ..
Here is where you can play with the different options. I’ve left the default as I was already very happy with the results !
Here is the result after 10 secs of calculation. Fast and effective !!!!
The original at 100%
And the processed crop
I’ll update this article as I read a bit about it and try to understand all the internal. But for a 10 minutes try, I’m hooked !!!
