Too many sins …
Tuesday 9 May 2006 @ 1:48 am

By the number of purify fountain in Japan, I’d guess that Japanese are big sinners. There are fountains where you can get purified at every corner !!

Golden Pavillon
Friday 5 May 2006 @ 2:28 am

Haaaa .. a bit of history on 400iso !! Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple formally known as Rokuonji. In 1397 construction started on the Golden Pavilion as part of a new residence for the retired shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Kinkakuji was converted into a Zen temple after Yoshimitsu’s death in 1408. The Golden Pavilion functions as shariden, housing sacred relics of the Buddha and is covered in gold leaf. The present building dates from 1955 as the pavilion was burnt by a fanatic monk in 1950.

This picture was taken during my 2005 trip to Japan. I’m scanning my last color prints !

At the museum

I came to visit Japan to see my firends of course but to take pictures as well. On my second day, I was all pumped up by a trip to Niko which was supposed to offer me some great picture opportunity. It was pouring rain. But there was a museum in the city ! We headed there hoping to find a great atmosphere and maybe a few nice piece. In any case, a museum is always a good place for pictures. It was the most boring museum on earth. 2 room filled with Japanese drawing which could have been drawn by my daughter (3 years old). I was very frustrated. I took this picture. Could someone tell me what it is ?

Tokyo is plenty of small restaurant such as this one, run by a couple of people, where you can grab a bite very quickly. The food is actually delicious and the atmosphere very laid back. My kind of place !!!

While walking tru the Tori, we’ve passed along houses opened. Really quiet interior which matched perfectly with the relaxing atmosphere of the place

School trip

This was taken in Nara while visiting the huge park leading to the Daibutsu Den (the largest wooden structrure in the world). There were plenty of school kids our for the day for what it seems was a school trip. They were everywhere ! It gave a very nice atmosphere to the place. These three were resting and chating.

More than 3 months after coming back from Japan, I’m starting to scan my color print. It’s a lengthy process emoticon .. First pictures were taken from the city hall which I believe is one of the tallest building in Tokyo. We spent quite a bit of time in there as the view is just … Amazing !! Geisha

Tri-x poussee a 3200.

During my trip to Japan, we of course ended up in Kyoto in the Geisha area … We didn’t see that much and to be honest I was a bit disapointed … I guess I was expecting something else … But anyway, it was another opportunity for some interesting shots. Here are 2 of them. Tri-X at 3200.

Lost without a guide

I’ve realized that visiting Japan without a guide could be quite a bit challenging. Japanese is of course the main reason if you can’t read/speak it and most people don’t speak english. I was fortunate to have the best guide in town ! My good friend Ingrid took a week off and took me everywhere ! She speaks fluently and knows the area pretty well. And have a motorcycle which is perfect to visit Tokyo. Anyway, this was the best guide I could dream of ! ;-) This picture was actually taken in Nara while we were enjoying a nice evening in a typical Japanese pub. I thin we ended up drunk though :-)

My guide in Tokyo !

Monastery
Saturday 12 November 2005 @ 6:43 pm

One of my wish when visiting Japan was to be able to sleep in a monastery and understand a little better the life of the monks living there. Well, thanks to my dear guide, I was able to do so. She surprised me in Kyoto and we ended spending the night at this very famous Monastery (maybe she’ll read this entry and give the name of the place :-) ) The next morning, we were able to attend their daily ceremony where they recite mantra during 30 minutes. It was a real magic moment. Their voice, the atmosphere, the light … Everything was perfect. I’ve tried to capture a bit of this moment … Light was very dim but I was able to get a few decent shot. Here are two.

By herself

This was a small statue in my friend’s house. She was there by herself on the table, contemplating life as a statue I guess :-) Anyway, I kind of liked it and thought she deserves a space on this blog. So here she is !

Of course school is fun when you visit the largest wooden building in the world ! This was in Nara, Japan. There, you’ll find the Daibustu-Den which is where reside a huge Daibustu (Ok, I’ll post a picture of the Daibutsu later this week, stay tuned ! :-) ) The place was packed with kids studying for the day this great national treasure.

Old man working
Wednesday 26 October 2005 @ 12:01 am

These 2 shots were taken in Nara which was on our way to Kyoto. I recommend everybody visiting Japan to stop by this wonderful city. There is so much to discover. At the end of our day, we ended up around some hundred of temple (which is not all that surprising in Japan) and this one was above a magnifient park. It was sundawn, and this guy was taking care of cleaning off this bowl were you’re supposed to get purified (with encent …). He fit perfectly with the atmosphere … At some point, we had some eye contact and without any saying I understood that he was okay for me to take his picture … Most Japanese are by the way. Which gives some good opportunity !!

Inside the boat
Wednesday 19 October 2005 @ 11:09 pm

Back to Japan !! This was taken in an amanzing building which was, as far as I understood, some sort of convention center. The architecture was based on a boat. Lighting was carefully studied to give a very futuristic look to the structure. I was almost transported into BladeRunner ! I spent something like 25 minutes, looking mostly up, amazed at this marvel.

Conspicious
Friday 14 October 2005 @ 1:56 am

It’s pretty difficult not to take a picture in a Japanese garden in Tokyo. Even more difficult, not taking picture of a bridge in a Japanese garden. Well, here is my contribution to this week Photo Friday’s challenge: Conspicious.
